Front Page News

The latest issue of Southern Voice  has a article about Gaylaxicon  as the front page article.
On the website you have to wait a few seconds for it to change to the article or go directly here -
The issue on the newsstands has a version of the picture that cuts out about half the people.
Many members of the Outworlders are in the picture as well as members of the Gaylaxicon planning committee.
Tremendous thanks to all those that turned out for the photo shoot and especially nervouskricket  for setting all of this up!  I hope to see everyone out for this event that has been so many years in the planning.

Gaylaxicon 2007

The programming schedule is up at www.gaylaxicon2007.org!

Head over there and see what's going on for the weekend. We still are adding things to the schedule so if you know someone who wants to come or wants to see something - or if that person is you, send me an email or click on programming and shoot an email to the programming guy, Alan.

He's really nice, I promise.

Other items of business:
1. Get your room reserved now to be able to take advantage of the $20 a night offer making the rate $129 a night.
2. Go ahead and register and let us know if you want a t-shirt, that way we can have yours all wrapped up and special for you.

See you soon!

For anyone headed to Dragon Con or the Decatur Book Festival this coming week, Gaylaxicon will be at Dragon Con with a table where you can get your membership for $50 for the weekend. The dates for Gaylaxicon are October 5-8, 2007 and the web site for guest information and event schedule is www.gaylaxicon2007.org. This is the nation's only GLBT sci-fi convention and is occurring in Atlanta this year. I hope you can make it.

Aug. 5th, 2007

Hello everyone. I just moved to the ATL and am interested in joining the outworlder's. I live in Sandy Springs ITP. I like dragoncon, buffy, xbox 360 and margaret cho.

I am super interested in helping plan for the events such as parties. I have been to several dragoncons and the Outworlders parties are the best. One year my friends and I made outfits with leather harnesses and black balloons which were most popular. Some of my friends want to do that again this year.

I also have some turntables and vinyl and a couple of really big speakers. I might need help hooking it up but once I do I can play some records. I have a bunch of eighties stuff. So yeah.

Who do I contact?

Is there an initiation?

*Hopes for initiation*

Is this is not allowed, please delete.

Just wondering if there are any women or men out there looking for a 25 year old bbw lesbian as a friend. I am finally finished with college and ready to actually have a social life.

I live in the Henry County area.

SF Movie Class

I was browsing Emory's continuing ed listings (http://www.cll.emory.edu) this afternoon, looking for something else, when I stumbled across this class! Thought Outworlders might appreciate.

- Wendy

Science — Fiction

Do you find yourself greeting friends with the phrase, "live long and prosper" while thinking about galaxies far, far away? If so, join us for a five-week investigation of the science fiction (sci-fi) genre in film. Gain a greater appreciation for these titles by learning the genre conventions pioneered by filmmakers such as George Melies and George Lucas. From the legendary Metropolis (1927) to the Oscar nominated Children of Men (2006), we'll leave no planet, galaxy, or film unexplored. If sci-fi movies are your passion, don’t miss these five nights of film clips and lively debate!

Instructor: Christian Pierce, Turner Broadcasting System, Inc.
5 session(s): Wed: Jul 11-Aug 8 / 7:00-9:00 pm
Registration fee: $130
Register open!

After this course, you will be able to

* Discuss your opinions of a film beyond the mere surface of plot and story.
* Seek out more obscure film titles in order to expand your knowledge of cinema history.
* Connect to the local film scene within the city of Atlanta.

What will be covered

* Elements of cinema history, particularly influences on the films we view
* Explanation of the technical aspects of filmmaking, particularly those techniques featured within the films we view
* Defining the vocabulary used in the industry
* Most importantly, your impressions of the film versus those of your classmates

Reconnections and Pride

As Kris Harter said this weekend “Look at all the people at the tent.  Even if we do not make a dime from this table it is so worth the money to see everyone getting together and reconnecting.”  The table for all the years we have had it at Pride has always been about getting new members and having a fun time in what is our largest gathering of the year.

Thanks to everyone’s tireless efforts to help this weekend happen.  I know I am going to miss some people but here it goes.

Jeff and his work all though the year to help us have the money to get the table and at the cheapest price possible.

Kris H. getting bags of snacks and her and Robert’s insuring there was plenty of water and drinks for all.

All the folks who came by and sat at the table drumming up interest in the group.  To Kris Harter, Chris Bacon, Scott Tatum and Justin (from Youth Pride - http://www.youthpride.org/) on their mission yesterday to sell every bracelet we had left.

Thanks to Carlton to his huge efforts at getting the flyers redesigned and so much easier to produce.

For Scott T. and his dark angel outfit and kilt that drew them in from all over the park.

For all of the bucket brigade folks that got out there and asked for donations to the Pride celebration which also gets us some money as well.  Michael G, Shelby, Kris H, Scott T., Jeff and Robert.  Especially Kris and Scott for getting money “by any means necessary.”

To Michael G. and Alan for providing the most excellent new shirts for the Outworlders.  You can order them through their website at http://www.kozmicdesigns.com/.  As well as the Gaylaxicon Shirts and emmm…towels.  There will be pics soon of the new shirts.

Thanks to the Frolicon (www.frolicon.org) folks for helping spread the information about our group to a whole other section of the park.

And to anyone else I have forgotten as well as a HUGE thanks to all of you that help out with Pride itself.  We have so many Outworlders involved I could not possibly name you all.

President, Outworlders Inc.

Pride Reminder

As we go into the coming weekend, I wanted to help each of us to remember how this all came about. Also, to consider that the person who first really struck back for us was transgendered and to consider how we treat that section of our community today as well as others who aren't so mainstream.

I hope to see you at Pride. Outworlders is having a Scavenger Hunt with a prize of a $25 gift certificate to Barnes and Noble for the winner. Those who complete the Hunt will have their namews put into a jar and the winning name drawn Sunday at 3 pm.

I personally would like to thank Darren of our group for first telling me this story and want to return the favor by letting other people know.

Now for the History:

In June 1969, a group of lesbian, gay, transgender, and bisexual people rioted following a police raid on the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar at 43 Christopher Street, New York City. The late Miss Stephen Whittaker, a transgender rights activist (partner of James Anstett) and founding member of both the Gay Liberation Front and the Gay Activists Alliance, is credited by many as the first to actually strike back at the police and, in doing so, spark the rebellion.
The Stonewall Riots are generally considered to be the beginning of the modern gay movement. For example, activist L. Craig Schoonmaker claims to have coined the term "gay pride" in description of the 1969 Stonewall riots.
Gay Liberation front and the Gay Activists Alliance in the early post-Stonewall era, coordinated the first month anniversary rally and then the "Christopher Street Gay Liberation Day March" on June 28, 1970 to commemorate the first year anniversary of the Stonewall Rebellion.
First year anniversary marches organized by other groups were also held in San Francisco and Los Angeles in 1970.

Pride Shifts

It's that time of year, and I would love to have a little bit of organization to it, one so that we can all get the chance to hang out and meet new people, and two, so that we can all participate in the Scavenger Hunt!

It would be best to have people at the table who are familiar with Gaylaxicon as we have a bunch of promotional materials for it. If one of these times will work for you, please go ahead and sign up for a time.

I will bring all of the materials to the booth each morning, or any materials that we did not leave at the table in the park. (Everything will be in waterproof containers.) Ed and Jeff will handle the load in Friday afternoon is my understanding.

The times for shifts are as follows:

Friday: 6:00-close

Saturday: 10:00 - 1:00, 1:00-3:00, 3:00-5:00, 5:00-7:00, 7:00-9:00

Sunday: 10:00-1:00, 1:00-3:00, 3:00-5:00, 5:00-7:00, 7:00-9:00

So far, either through specific response or general, I have selected these times for people.
Dan Benge: 11:00-1:00 Saturday
Kris R: 10:00-1:00 Saturday
Kris H: 6:00-close Friday
Ed: 6:00- close Friday

Scavenger Hunt!

We are doing something different this year!

Yay, a scavenger hunt!

We will have questions on a postcard and all of those who answer/perform the questions on the postcard will be entered into a drawing for a $25 gift card from Barnes and Noble!

Stop by our booth at B-49, pick up your copy and get to work! We will draw a name Sunday afternoon at 4 pm, so please have your completed form back to the booth by then.

The booth will also be stocked with snacks and drinks for your health and benefit to have a chance to rest and get out of the heat for a few moments.

Other things:
We are sharing our booth with Gaylaxicon. Pay your membership next weekend at Pride. It's $50.

Pay you dues for Outworlders and become a voting member for $10, or just give us a donation when you see us wandering around the park - 50% of the money we collect comes back to the Outworlders.

Hope to see you there!

(BTW, if you would like to sit at the booth for any period of time, please let us know, it's a lot of fun to see everyone and say hello!)

DragonCon Information Services

I know some of you volunteer with Dc already, but for those who may be considering it, only a few groups have openigns this year.  One of them is Information Services.

As some of you may have heard at yesterday's meeting and as tankfreak mentioned in whedontrack_dc, Kathy Dawson (tittergrrl) has moved on from Information Services to be the director of the Whedon Track.  I told her that I would assist her in finding 3 to 4 new volunteers for Information Services while the new director of Information Services is chosen.

Please feel free to contact tittergrrl or myself if you would like to be a volunteer this year with Info Services.  It has been a great experience for me in the past.  Kathy managed to work out a schedule so that most everyone could attend the events they wished and still put in their 20 hours.  We meet lots of new and interesting people and see all the great costumes from the vantage points we have had in the past and we lose up shop early enough in the night to enjoy the parties and other fun that happens after dark.

If you did not know, we basically help people find there way and interpret the dragoncon program for lost souls.  If events move or are canceled for nay reason we usually get this information and let people in on it between Daily Dragon publications.

If you get the Sunday paper, please save the coupons for me if you don't look through them yourself.

OR, please do this. There are three coupons in Atlanta's Sunday newspaper for free cat food and dog food. Clinics and the Humane shelters and groups like PALS would love to have these coupons. If you can, as I am going to do, go to a store and get the double packs of papers for $2.50, and that way you get six of these coupons instead of three. And so on should you be willing to buy more.

Again, if you can't get them to one of those places, get them to me at:

Kris Harter
2665 Meadow Court
Chamblee, GA 30341

Thanks in advance if you participate.

7:30 Movie Time for Zodiac

For those that I might not reach otherwise, the movie start time is 7:30!!!

So, push back all those times to the 7:30 mark, and we're good.

Call Ed with concerns.

I still have 5 passes to give away.

Feb. 25th, 2007

Movie Pass Edit

The movie will start at 7pm. So Ed will be there as soon as possible after work - he gets off around 6:15 pm. I assume he will be available til about 6:45 pm, or if crowded, earlier than that.

Call him if you need to at 404-933-7676.

Zodiac Passes

I have passes to a preview of the movie Zodiac at the Midtown Arts theater for Tuesday night. Reply to this post or email me if you want one - it is good for two people.

Ed will be going and you will meet up with him there if you choose to go - for free!

I will edit this post tomorrow with the exact time of the showing, but my guess is that it will be at 7:30 pm and Ed will be out front until 7:10 pm, or catch him in line if the line looks long.
